The candle was an improvement over the oil or kerosene lamp because there is no reservoir of hot, flammable liquid in a breakable container ... near an open flame.  As we are once again wondering how best to light our homes with  available fuel, it is good to look back at the trade in beeswax, whale oil, and fossil fuels and think about history.
