Gas Prices
I am sorry for the recent hiatus: I abruptly found myself in the market for a new car. Since the average price of gas in Los Angeles is $4.62 per gallon I first looked a a hydrogen fuel cell car (but I live just outside the current test market) and most of the electric cars fit for urban and freeway driving were either expensive or a year or two away. I bought a conventional car, but with a great deal of grumbling — which will continue every time I open the gas cap.
(For those accustomed to the plentiful public transportation systems of most urban areas, I present to you the Los Angeles subway system: if it isn't on the four points of the compass you'd better drive there.)
-Kushana, cursing everyone peripherally associated with current gas prices and the internal combustion engine, and the horses they rode in on. Hm, a horse can gallop at the low end of highway speed...

Have you considered a scooter? Granted, they're no good for long-distance travel, but 90 MPG is hard to argue with.

Only if I wanted to be a very well educated pancake: average travel speeds here are 50-80 mph and, this being California, everyone drives as though they were immortal. (The SUV is still the dominant species.)
