On my end I sometimes can't think of a book to send people too (or I can, but it's not a title I'd make anyone who didn't have a Master's degree read.) Too often there simply isn't a book that's theologically neutral, historically sound, and not sleep-inducing.
(After reading your last paragraph I now want to go to my professional conference, tuck my thumbs under my arms, and slowly walk up to my most august colleagues saying "Bwaaak, bwaak, bwak" slowly. Unfortunately this is not the usual format for addressing one's peers: pity, conferences would be far more entertaining.)

So I'd love to see more good books for the general public on the history of the Bible and other sacred texts. And that of course extends to other fields. There are many areas I'd love to read about that I never explore because the only works available are impenetrable to me. Doesn't mean I couldn't grasp the material, but the presentation is aimed at people with a very specific educational background.
Perhaps part of the opposition to mainstream publication is fear. It takes a great deal of skill to write accurately and well for a general audience, perhaps more than writing for other specialists.
